Philip provided me with GPS tracks from his SatNav from our Normandy trip which I’ve converted and posted to this blog.
How did I do it?
Basically I used http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/map_input with a map width of 500 pixels; saved the generated source; edited to include my Google Maps API key; posted the file to my webserver and then included an iFrame in the blog.
Doesn’t help you? The above was more for my reference than yours…

Whilst we were at Legoland California, Andrew and I rode “Captain Cranky’s Challenge”. While we rode it I monitored the acceleration of the ride using Roller Coaster Physics, an iPhone application that records forces using the iPhone’s accelerometer.

No wonder I thought I’d loose my lunch…

Finally managed to compile an LLTD (Link Layer Topology Discovery) responder for my Fedora box – trease on the map below.

Draws quiet an interesting (and, surpringly, accurate) map of our domestic network. The only real error is that “trease” is not dual homed and is called “sagan” in real life.
Could it be more complex? Actually, yes!
If only I could manage to get the responder to compile on OSX and if I could get a working toolchain for the NetGear DG834 router….

We’ve had broadband in the house since September 2004 – nearly five years.
Because of the line length between the house and the Kincorth exchange, speed as always been an issue. Initially capped at 512K and then when BT lifted line speed limits up to about 1.5M – but very variable.
Imagine my surprise when I borrowed and old (and I mean old) ADSL router from Alistair the other evening, plugged it in and it connected at 2.5M.
My old Vigor 2600 seems to only support ADSL, whereas this NetGear DG834 (v1) supports ADSL2 and ADLS2+ protocols. Maybe that is what is making the difference.
So, all in all, until BT deploy fibre-to-the-cabinet here (maybe sometime in the next three years), I’m happy with the free upgrade.
Thanks very much Alistair!

Smashed my iphone on the way to work yesterday
What to do?
Well after a couple of phone calls, the options seemed to be to send it to Apple for repair (about £200 and two weeks) or take it to an O2 shop (two weeks for quote) or pop into an Apple Store for a replacement (£200).
The problem? The nearest Apple Store is in Glasgow.
The solution? Take a day off work and head for Glasgow.
So, that is what I did. Took an early training to Glasgow, did some browsing around the shops until my Apple Genius appointment, paid my money to a very friendly and helpful Apple employee, restored everything from iTunes on my MacBook and walked out with a new, working iPhone 3G 16G. All pretty painless (except the money!).
The time on the train was well spent finishing an excellent book on the Dam Busters raid and really relaxing.
When I got back to Aberdeen, Julie and the kids accused me of being in “too good a mood” and to stop it!

Ian and I headed outside last night and saw the space shuttle Discovery and the International Space Station pass over. Discovery had undocked a few hours earlier, so we saw two bright stars moving from the west across the sky.
Pretty amazing!
