Just arrived at LAX and dumped the hire car.
We managed to drive 2,147 miles from SF to LA via Monterey, Tucson and Phoenix in 15 days.

Whilst we were at Huntington Gardens today we spent some time in the Japanese Gardens. Ian decided it was time for him to learn how to take pictures. Here are some of the best…

Spent today driving from Highland, CA to Tucson, AZ via Phoenix with Ian and Julie. Rachel stayed in Highland at the Deans.
It was a long, long drive, but strangely relaxing. Lots and lots of desert with mountains in the distance.
To miss-quote Buzz Aldrin on this day (the 40th Anniversary of the first Moon landing): “magnificent desolation”.
Whilst we were at Legoland California, Andrew and I rode “Captain Cranky’s Challenge”. While we rode it I monitored the acceleration of the ride using Roller Coaster Physics, an iPhone application that records forces using the iPhone’s accelerometer.
No wonder I thought I’d loose my lunch…
Our first day in Highland.
36°C! Hot!
Visited some of the local shops this morning and the kids are lazing in the pool this afternoon.
MacBook, iced water, pool, sun. What more could I ask for?
So far Rachel and Lauren, Andrew and Ian all seem to be getting on.
Well, we’ve just arrived at the Deans…

I didn’t take the pictures, Google did…
First full day in San Francisco.
We rode the famous cable car over Nobb Hill to Fisherman’s Wharf where we wandered around for a couple of hours, before heading to downtown where Julie and Rachel shopped whilst Ian and I watched.
Ate pizza for dinner in Uncle Vito’s and had an early night.
Arrived in SF today. Got the BART up to the city and a taxi to our hotel – the Fairmont on the top of Nobb Hill. We are in a room on the 23rd floor of the hotel’s tower block and have fantastic views across the city.
Hotel is very nice, with friendly staff and lots of history. Built just before the 1906 earthquake, it has been one of the city’s top hotels ever since. It was the site of the drafting of the UN Charter in 1945 and has been used in many films – Vertigo, The Rock, Towering Inferno and Dirty Harry to mention a few. It is also the Hotel featured in Arthur Hailey’s Hotel TV series in the late ’80s.
All had an early night to start getting over jet lag.
